Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year. The Hampton Elementary School staff is excited to welcome students into the building after a relaxing summer break. As the final details to the building project are wrapping up, it has been a time to reflect on all of the changes that have occurred over the last 18 months. We are enjoying the newly remodeled classrooms and the added security of an all enclosed campus. We are extremely grateful to the Hampton community for supporting this project.

It is exciting to have new faces join the Hawk family. I would also like to welcome Mr. Kirby Ruhnke as our new 3rd grade/junior high language arts teacher and football coach. He will be a great addition to the Hawk team!
We’ve had a GREAT start to the school year and we look forward to serving the students, families and members of the Hampton community. Go Hawks!
A new school year always brings new and exciting changes. Take a look at the list of great things happening in the elementary in 2018-2019:
- New Bridges Math curriculum in Kindergarten - 5th grade and Big Ideas in 6th grade. A new math curriculum is always exciting, but it can also create some anxiety for parents. During our year long math curriculum research we were focused on finding a curriculum that would help our students be better problem solvers, allow students to explain their thinking and encourage students to understand that sometimes there is more than one way to find an answer. We feel like BRIDGES and Big Ideas are a great fit for HPS! We will host several math nights throughout the year to keep parents informed of our math journey. Parents, please remember that when you are helping your child, the math might sometimes seem unfamiliar or different than you remember, but there are many ways you can help!
- Invite your child to talk about the math by asking questions like, “Did you do a problem like this at school? How did you think about it?
- Focus on the pictures, Bridges uses models to make the math accessible to all learners. Talking about the picture is a great way to get started. Ask questions like, “ What do you notice about this picture? Where do you see the numbers in this picture? Can we use the picture to help solve the problem?
- Invite your child to talk about the math by asking questions like, “Did you do a problem like this at school? How did you think about it?
- School buses are being loaded from the back of the school to limit the traffic congestion in the front of the building. The safety of students is extremely important to us and we believe having a separate loading area would help keep everyone safe.
- New Science Curriculum in 1st, 3rd and 6th grade to support the transition to the new science standards. These 3 grade levels will be the tested on the new standards. The remainder of elementary classrooms will receive their new curriculum during the 2019-2020 school year.
- W.I.N.(What I Need) Class Period in the elementary - a specially designed 30 minutes time period for students to receive individual or small group instruction at their ability level.
- A remodeled preschool playground that meets the needs of our littlest learners by providing them an age appropriate place to develop their fine and gross motor skills.
