October is my favorite month of the year at school. Teachers and students have settled into a routine and classrooms are busy with learning. The elementary teachers have jumped right in with the new math series and every day they stop by my office to celebrate a math success from their classrooms. I would like to share just a few comments I’ve heard over the last several days:
I love to hear these math celebrations. While I know there will still be growing pains during the implementation process, we believe we’ve selected a math program that will develop great math thinkers and problem solvers. I encourage you to contact your child’s teacher if you have questions about math strategies that are being taught or homework. Thanks for partnering with us on our new math adventure.
We will continue the “Healthy Hawk” classroom meal this year. This program was developed by the members of our Wellness Committee to encourage healthy meal planning. Our sixth grade students kicked off the year by selecting the healthy lunch meal of a Chicken Cordon Bleu Sandwich, mixed fruit and cabbage salad. Thank you to those parents and grandparents that attended our first Healthy Hawk meal of 2018-2019! The following dates have been selected for each grade level:
October 16th: 5th grade
November 20th: 4th grade
January 22nd: 3rd grade
February 19th: 2nd grade
March 19th: 1st grade
April 16th: Kindergarten
We are looking forward to meeting with families on September 26th for Parent Teacher conferences. Conferences will be from 3:00 – 8:00. Be watching your child’s backpack for your scheduled conference time. If you have a conflict with the time given to you, please contact your child’s teacher to reschedule.
Please feel free to stop by at any time. My door is always open!

- My students are enjoying the Problem Strings. They are beginning to use these strings to explain their math thinking. There is so much “math talk’ happening and it makes kids excited to learn from each other.
- My students are quickly solving the missing addend game and can solve the game in a variety of ways.
- The monthly theme of apples is allowing us to make real life connections when talking about math.
- My students are learning there is more than one way to get a final answer to a multiplication problem and they are using the strategy that makes the most sense to them to calculate an answer.
- Students are using “I can” statements to help them understand what they are expected to learn and if they have been successful.
- My students love the hands-on materials during math stations. These stations allow students to have repeated practice of particular math skills.
